Marshall: Alydia “LaVerne” (nee Berends) Schwartz age 82 of Marshall, formerly of the Renville, passed away at Eyota on Monday, August 23, 2010. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Renville. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Renville. Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.
Alydia LaVerne (Berends) Schwartz, known to most as LaVerne, was born on September 15, 1927 in Erickson Township, Renville County to Charly and Elizabeth (Freiborg) Berends. She was baptized on November 6, 1927 and professed her faith on June 30, 1950 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Renville, MN. LaVerne maintained a life long membership with Ebenezer Church and was also very active with Christ Lutheran in Marshall. She attended District 142 country school near her parents homestead. LaVerne was united in marriage to Ernst Mathaeus Schwartz on July 13, 1952 in Renville. They resided in Marshall where she was a wife, mother and homemaker. LaVerne and Ernst were blessed with two daughters, Lorry and Darcy. She was known for her vegetable and flower gardens, recipe testing skills, and her love of fishing and traveling with her family. LaVerne enjoyed playing baseball in earlier years and followed the Minnesota Twins on television and at the stadium. She was also committed to life-long learning, absorbing new knowledge constantly and encouraged her children and grandchildren to so as well. She was committed to her family and this was shown through her kindness, compassion, love and enthusiasm for life.
Ernst passed away on October 18, 1993. LaVerne joined him in death at her daughter’s home in Eyota on Monday, August 23, 2010. She had reached the age of 82 years, 11 months and 8 days.
She is survived by her two daughters,Lorry (and Troy) Schwartz Karow of Faribault and Darcy Buntrock of Eyota; three grandchildren, Tyler Karow, Ahna Buntrock and Emmy Buntrock; two sisters, Frances (and Roger) Agre of Glenwood and Shirley Engstrom of Renville; a sister-in-law, Pat Berends of Renville; also many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernst; infant daughter; and her brother, Charles Berends.
