Barbara Ann Ketterling was born in Elgin, North Dakota, on November 14, 1933, to Arndt and Gertrude (Steigmeier) Ketterling. She was baptized at Grace Reformed Church on May 18, 1934, and later confirmed on June 19, 1949. Barb attended Elgin High School where she graduated with the class of 1951, and then continued her education at the Wahpeton State School of Science. It was while she was attending college that she met Mr. Albert Steuck, Jr.

Barb began her career as a secretary for Standard Oil in Jamestown, North Dakota, a number of years prior to her marriage to Albert on June 23, 1956. The couple wed at the Grace Reformed Church in Heil, North Dakota, and made their home in Albert’s hometown of Long Prairie, Minnesota. To this union two children were born, Beth and Jay.

Barb was a dedicated homemaker and mother for several years and also did daycare early on. Outside the home she worked for Cathedral Press, in the kitchen of the local public school, at the Todd County Civil Defense office as a secretary and switchboard operator, and later at the Todd County Auditor Office. While living in Long Prairie, Barb was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she volunteered in the preschool program and sang in the church choir.

Following the passing of her husband, Barb relocated to Marshall in 2012 to be closer to her daughter. She joined Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was again active in the choir. Barb was active at the Marshall Senior Center visiting or playing games such as Yahtzee, Dominoes, and Bingo.

Family was the most important part of Barb’s life. She participated in many neighborhood picnics and fish fries and some of her favorite memories were made with her four sisters on their “sister trips.” In her free time, Barb could often be found in her garden; she had a green thumb and found joy in watching her vegetables and flowers bloom. Barb enjoyed sewing, quilting, stained glass, painting, and reading historical non-fiction books at the library.

Barb died peacefully on Monday, June 10, 2024, in Marshall, Minnesota. She had reached the age of 90 years, 6 months, and 27 days. Blessed be her memory.

Barb is survived by her children, Beth Steuck of Marshall, and Jay Steuck of Tampa, FL; six siblings, Harriet Levorsen of Elgin, ND, Mary (Don) Underwood of Moncks Corner, SC, Phil (Tracy) Ketterling of Sun City West, AZ, Tim (Sandy) Ketterling of Heil, ND, Tom Ketterling of Elgin, ND, Martin (Phyllis) Ketterling of Bismarck, ND; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Steuck Jr.; parents, Arndt and Gertrude Ketterling; 3 siblings, Allegra (Bill) Bloom, Cathy (Ted) Eslinger, Mark Ketterling; siblings-in-law, Carlton Levorsen, Marilyn Ketterling, and Joyce Ketterling.
