Bernell “Bernie” Tammen, age 69, of Marshall, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2007 at the Prairie Home Hospice House. Funeral services are planned for 11:00 AM on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Christ United Presbyterian Church in Marshall. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 22, from 4 to 8 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery.
Bernell Wopka Hoogheem was born on October 25, 1938, in Clara City, Minnesota, to Cornelius and Jennie (Peterson) Hoogheem. She was baptized and confirmed at the Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City. Bernie attended and graduated from Clara City High School. She experienced many moves with her family during her childhood, living in Hibbing, Duluth, Waconia, Esko and Clara City Minnesota.
On November 29, 1958, Bernie and Ronald Tammen were united in marriage in Clara City. They lived in Clara City, Granite Falls, ultimately raising a family and working in Marshall. She worked as a sales clerk for Thrifty White Drug and was a faithful member of Christ United Presbyterian Church in Marshall. Bernie served as a deacon, choir member, and an elder. She helped with Meals on Wheels, fall bazaar, ladies serve group and Christmas Eve dinners.
Her enjoyments in life included gardening, watching sports, listening to music, singing, and spending time with family and friends, especially the grandchildren.
Bernie passed away at the age of 69 years, 7 months, and 24 days.
Survivors include her children, Pam (and Gary) Teichert of Alexandria, Lori (Tammen) Swift and Jerald Swift of Sioux Falls, SD, Steven (and Joan) Tammen of Crofton, NE, Sherese (and Chris) Kelliher of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Rachel Chelin of Hutchinson, Jessica Teichert of Hutchinson, MN, Colin Teichert of Alexandria, Jason Swift of Sioux Falls, SD, Chelsea Swift of Sioux Falls, SD, Taylor and Tory Tammen of Crofton, NE, Brooke and Ashlyn Kelliher of Sioux Falls, Mike Kelliher of Watertown and great grandchild Gavin Chelin of Hutchinson; mother, Jennie Tebben of Clara City, siblings, Paul (and Lois) Hoogheem of Maynard, Darrel (and Lori) Hoogheem of Marshall, Alvina (and Alan) Brouwer of Litchfield, and Gordy (and Geneva) Grussing of Clara City; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; father, Cornelius Hoogheem; step-father, Kasjen Tebben; sister, LaVonne Grussing, and niece, Amy Hoogheem
