Brandt Kendall Stewart was born on May 26, 1930, to parents Harold Stewart and Bernedine Horstmann in Tracy, Minnesota. Early in his youth his mother remarried Mr. William Pope and the blended family made their home in Lynd, Minnesota. Brandt attended school there and graduated from Lynd High School With the class of 1949. On October 20, 1951, Brandt was united in marriage to Ellie DeVries at the Methodist Church in Balaton, Minnesota. Brandt soon entered The United States Army and honorably served his country, while stationed in Germany from 1952 until 1954.

Upon returning home Brandt became active in law enforcement and furthered his career becoming BCA certified in 1969, a record technician in 1972, and then radar certified before his intermediate command course completion in 1976. He studied criminal justice courses at Southwest State University in Marshall, finishing in 1973, and later attended a criminal justice seminar in Bloomington, Minnesota, in 1977. His desire to protect and serve meant he also became a certified emergency medical technician. Brandt worked part time in law enforcement in Lynd for 11 years before serving as the Chief of Police in Balaton for a year and Chief of Police in Tracy for eight more years. Lastly, Brandt spent 18 years with the Murray County Sheriff prior to retiring as Chief Deputy in 1996.

Brandt was active in the VFW, American Legion, Minnesota Chief of Police Association, Southwest Peace Officers Association, and the Tracy Ambulance. His enjoyment in life included keeping a pristine yard and helping Ellie in the garden, feeding birds, camping, fishing, and tooling around on his golf cart. Brandt especially loved spending time with family - even though they would change the television program during his nap - and giving people a little guff.
