Charlotte R. Sheffield, age 75, of Russell, passed away at the Golden Living Center Covington Heights in Sioux Falls on Thursday, October 1, 2009. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 5, 2009 at Grace First Parish in Russell. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M. on Sunday evening, October 4, with a 7:00 prayer service at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. Charlotte Rae Sheffield was born to Venice Cecil and Thelma Orcelia (Ryan) Willfong on January 1, 1934 in Russell, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith, and graduated from the Russell High School.
Charlotte was a clerical worker at the Continental Insurance Company in Minneapolis for 18 years. Charlotte was united in marriage to William “Bill” Sheffield on February 15, 1969 in Minneapolis. They moved to Russell and Charlotte worked at the Lyon County Courthouse where she was the Deputy County Auditor for 18 years. She then went on to become the County Auditor for 7 years, retiring on January 2, 1996.
Bill passed away on November 7, 2002 and Charlotte joined him in death on October 1, 2009 at the Golden Living Center Covington Heights in Sioux Falls.
She is survived by her son, Jerry (and Geri) Willfong of Sioux Falls; grandson, Tom (and Lacey) Willfong of Decatur, IL; two great-grandchildren, Katie Willfong of Yankton, SD, and Caleb Willfong of Decatur, IL; sister, Betty Benson of Houston, TX; also many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Bill.
Charlotte was an active member of the Russell Presbyterian Church, Order Of The Eastern Star (Degree Of Honor), Russell Cemetery Association (Treasurer), and American Legion Post 460 Auxiliary.
Charlotte’s enjoyments in life were her family, reading, doing word puzzles, flea markets and antique sales.
