Cheryl Elaine Lund was born on February 8, 1955 to Arvid and Marlys (Lee) Lund in Marshall, Minnesota. She was baptized on March 27, 1955 by Pastor Erling Borg-Breen at Silo Lutheran Church in Cottonwood, Minnesota. She affirmed her faith on May 3, 1970 as she was confirmed by Pastor Burton Schwerin at Christ Lutheran Church in Cottonwood. Cheryl attended school in Cottonwood and graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1973. She furthered her education and graduated from Waseca Technical College in Waseca, Minnesota in 1977. Throughout her life, Cheryl shared her love of reading with others. In worship services at Christ Lutheran, she enjoyed being a lector. She blessed elderly friends by reading to them in their homes. Amy, Kyle and Christopher always liked to hear a story read by Aunt Cheryl, who believed that every story should be read with much expression and meaning.
When Cheryl worked at Gwen Norland’s Tailoring, she was meticulous and careful in her work. She learned so much and appreciated her co-workers and customers in those years. Cheryl was a loyal and committed employee at Mid-Continent Cabinetry for 23 years, where she met many wonderful friends. She enjoyed her walks home after work and meeting people along the way. It was very disappointing to her to not be able to return to work after her surgery in July of 2011.
Cheryl shared her strong faith with others in many ways, through teaching Sunday School for more than 20 years, singing in the Senior Choir, playing bells in the Handbell Choir, cutting quilt blocks for quilting days, serving as a confirmation mentor, being part of book clubs, and serving on various boards and committees. She had a keen interest in outreach beyond her local congregation.
To be out in nature and working in flower gardens was a source of great joy. Cheryl worked outdoors around the farm as she grew up. She had a love of animals, especially cats, and was delighted when her father bought her a horse that she named, Miss Marty Sue. Cheryl was generous with her time as she treasured moments with her family. She loved the trips to see relatives in South Dakota, and a special trip to Boston to visit her good friend, Kay. Memories of roller-skating and snow-sledding with her cousins from Russell, Minnesota brought a smile to her face. Family was so important to Cheryl, and she would do anything for her niece, Amy, and her nephews, Kyle and Christopher. One of Cheryl’s greatest gifts was her listening ear. If a person had time to talk or share a story, Cheryl always had time to listen. She was a wonderful friend.
Cheryl was diagnosed in July of 2011 with a brain tumor and lived with grace and Christian hope throughout the months that followed that diagnosis. She died on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at her home in Cottonwood surrounded by her family.
She leaves to celebrate her life, her mother, Marlys of Cottonwood; her sisters, Susan (Rick) Foster of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Karen (Dean) Berg of Cottonwood; her niece, Amy Foster of Sioux Falls, and her nephews, Kyle and Christopher Berg of Cottonwood; as well as many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Arvid; her grandparents; an aunt and uncle; and a cousin.
Blessed be the memory of Cheryl Elaine Lund.
