Claire Sorbel, age 81, of Marshall, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2013 at his home.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 5th, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Marshall. Burial will take place in the Marshall Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.and continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Claire Olaf Sorbel, the son of Oscar and Clara (Shellum) Sorbel was born on February 21, 1932 in Tracy, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at the Tracy Lutheran Church.
Claire was united in marriage to Joyce LaVonne Saxton on December 23, 1951 at the Tracy Lutheran Church. After their marriage they lived in Tracy, Sioux Falls, SD and finally in Marshall.
Claire was a cabinet maker and he retired in 1991. After his retirement, they wintered in Arizona. He was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church and a member of Hitchhiker Camping Club and Good Sam Camping.
Claire’s hobbies included model airplane building, relief wood carving, self-taught guitar, piano and harmonica playing. He loved camping and traveling, especially Glacier Park and the wonders of God’s work.
Claire is survived by his children Rob Sorbel (special friend Bernita), Renae (Dan) Stassen and Terry (Julie) Sorbel, all of Marshall; 6 grandchildren, Matthew (Dana) Stassen, Amy (Bo) Stassen, Benjamin (Amanda) Stassen, Melissa (Mitch) Highman, Jazlyn (Dan) Johnson and Jeremy Sorbel; 6 great-grandchildren, Dylan, James and Xavier Stassen, Jack Highman, Jerzy and Ashton Johnson; 2 sisters, Goldie Wilking of Tracy and Evelyn Herder of Slayton, sister-in-law, Eunice Dahl of Santa Ana, CA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his parents; brothers, Donald, Marion, Orville and Jerome Dahl, Orie, Ozzie and Leland Sorbel; brother-in-laws, Herman Wilking, Vern Herder and Fred Ankrum.
