Dale Hiland, age 72, of Marshall, Minnesota, died peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at his home in Marshall, Minnesota. Memorial Services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall, Minnesota. A reception for attendees will immediately follow at the AmericInn Hotel in Marshall. Visitation will be held just prior to his celebration, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., also at the Hamilton Funeral Home.
Dale Michael Hiland was born on January 2, 1952, in Morris, Minnesota. He was the son of Francis and Edna (DeFrang) Hiland. Dale was baptized as an infant and confirmed in his youth at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Hancock, Minnesota. He attended school in Hancock as well, graduating with the high school class of 1970. Dale went on to attend college at the University of Minnesota in Morris before studying abroad in Germany. Upon returning home he owned and operated the Mall Cafe in Montevideo, Minnesota, for several years before returning to his education. He graduated from South Dakota State University in Brookings with a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Human Resource Development in May 1993.
Dale worked as a social worker in Pipestone County and later transitioned to Marshall when he began with Southwest Health and Human Services as a social worker in 1998. He spent 20 years there and retired in 2018 as a supervisor. In recent years Dale enjoyed teaching art classes at Gold College on the SMSU campus in Marshall.
Dale truly cared for other people as he spent most of his career looking out for others. He was proud of his family and his many pet cats. In his spare time, he thoroughly enjoyed painting and listening to German music.
Dale Hiland died peacefully at his home on April 25, 2024, in Marshall, Minnesota. He had reached the age of 72 years, 3 months, and 23 days. Blessed be his memory.
He is survived by his sister, Pam Green of Hutchinson; 10 nieces and nephews, Rhonda (and Joe) Pickar of Maple Grove, Kim Knippenberg of Maplewood, Ronald Steen Jr. of Norwood, Dawn (and Bob) Bitzan of Goodhue, Dana (and Lee) Webskowski of Sioux Falls, SD, Denise (and Bruce) Johnson of Lester Prairie, Jeff (and Roseanne) Boutain of Neenah, WI, Bryan (and Christie) Boutain of Gilbert, AZ, Joel (and Kim) Boutain of Alexandria, Stacey Boutain of Custer, SD; 21 grand nieces and nephews; Many great-grand nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Larry Revering of Cologne; other relatives and many friends.
Dale was preceded in death by his life partner, Harvey Witt; father, Francis Hiland; mother and stepfather, Edna and Wally Reed; sisters, Janet Revering, Shari (and Bill) Boutain; brother-in-law, Bob Green; half-brother, Francis Hiland; and a grand-nephew, Hunter Boutain.
