Donald Allen Walter

Russell: Donald A. Walter, age 69, of Russell, passed away at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will be 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will also be available one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Donald Allen Walter was born to the late John and Martha (Raveling) Walter in Heron Lake. He was baptized at the Methodist Church in Heron Lake. He attended school in Russell and graduated in 1958. After graduation he worked at Bill's Oliver and farmed. On June 14, 1969 Don was united in marriage to JoAnn (Drietz) Bukowski at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. After moving into Russell, he worked at the Coop and Southwest Minnesota Dairy Association as a truck driver and handy man until his retirement in 2000 due to health reasons. Don also served on the Russell City Council from 1983-1996 and the Russell Fire and Ambulance Departments from 1973 - 1991. During this time he served as Fire Chief from 1985-1988.
Don’s enjoyments in life included hunting, fishing, working on small engines, hobby farming, gardening, wood working, watching westerns, and visiting with family and friends. Don always served as the family mechanic, and loved to help fix any one of the kids' cars. He was a handy man, owned many tools, and always wanted to do it himself. He completed all of his own home improvements, and there was never a job too big or too small that he wasn't willing to tackle. Helping the kids with their projects was something he played an active role in, and enjoyed.
Don passed away on October 27, 2009, at the age of 69 years and 21 days.
He is survived by his wife, Joann Walter of Russell; children, Dan (and Leslie) Bukowski of Cary IL, Dave Bukowski of Marshall, Jean (and Dave) Vercruysse of Russell,MN, and Daren (and Aimee) Walter of Champlin, MN; grandchildren, Kristen, (Dan) Megan, Luke, and Tanner Bukowski, (Dave) Colin and Brett Vercruysse, and Jared and Gavin Walter; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and other relatives and friends.
