Marshall: Emerence “Rose” Marie Labat, age 92 of Marshall, passed away at the Prairie Home Hospice House on Monday, December 31, 2012. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 4th at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Visitation will be 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with a 4:00 P.M. Rosary service and 7:00P.M. prayer service Thursday, at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service.
Emerence “Rose” Marie was born on January 16, 1920 in Fairview Township, Lyon County to Jules and Mary (Brewers) DeVos. She was baptized at St. Eloi Church in Ghent. Rose grew up on a farm by Marshall during the Great Depression and was the oldest of twelve siblings. She was confirmed at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and received first communion.
On July 10, 1939, Rose was united in marriage to Henry Labat at St. Eloi Church. After the couple’s marriage, they owned a trucking business. They also farmed in the Marshall area. Rose was a homemaker and she cooked for Weiner Memorial Cafeteria, Holy Redeemer School, she cooked and cleaned for homebound individuals. Rose also cooked for weddings at Carlin Hall and the priests in Marshall for quite some time. On September 1, 2007, Rose moved to Boulder Estates.
Rose’s enjoyments in life included watching the MN Twins, playing cards, bingo, tripoly with friends at Boulder. She was a wonderful cook and baker. She was one that did not like to miss a good party.
Rose was an active member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church at the time of her death. She received the Bishops Metal for Service. She was a member of Catholic Daughters, CCW and VFW Ladies Auxillary. Rose’s faith and the Holy Rosary were very important.
Rose is survived by her eleven children, Donnie (Phyllis) Labat, of Sun City, AZ, Judy Labat and Gordy Labat, both of Phoenix, Pauline Serreyn, and Dan (Sandy)Labat, both of Green Valley, Doug “Duke” (Carol) of Wagoner, OK, Greg (Marilyn) of Marshall, Larry (LaVonne), of Green Valley, Mary Kay (Gary) Hoflock, of Marshall, Tom (Cheryl) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Deb Picht, of Marshall; 30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; five siblings, Eddie (Violet) DeVos, Sr. Anna Marie DeVos, Donna Johnson and Betty DeVos, all of Marshall and Julius (MaryAnn) DeVos, of Lakeville; sister-in-laws, Delores DeVos, of Las Vegas, Sophie DeVos, of Tyler, Mary Buysse and Julia Labat, of Minneota; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; brothers, Vic, Leo, Roy and Jim; sisters, Priscilla DeVos and Jenny Peltier; son-in-laws, Randy Picht and Howard Serreyn; daughter-in-law, Janet Labat; grandchildren (twins), Brenda and Bradley Serreyn; and great-grandson, Ray Gregory Labat. Rose will be missed very much especially by her family and others who knew her.
