George E. Berg, age 96, of Milroy, passed away Monday, January 11, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Wabasso. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Milroy. Burial will be Friday in the Lebanon Cemetery in Apple Valley. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. Wednesday evening, January 13, at the church in Milroy. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday, at the church. Arrangements are by the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall.
George Elmer Berg was born to Albert and Clara (Oehlke) Berg on April 5, 1913 near Rosemount, Minnesota. After graduating from Lebanon Township Grade School and Rosemount High School, George spent two years at Hamline University. He then graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural education, science, and biology.
George married Ruby Hope Sewill in 1939 and had a daughter, June Hope, and a son, Norman George. He taught Full Ag and FFA at Okabena, St. Charles, and Springfield. He was a special agent for State Farm Life Insurance for two years, before becoming employed by Milroy School to put into operation a G.I. farm program for Veterans of World War II and the Korean War. When the program was complete he taught Math, Science, and Biology. He then started his own tax business in Marshall.
George married Darlene Sik in 1984. George was baptized in the Methodist faith, and then joined the Lutheran Church in Milroy. He was past president of Eagles in Marshall and past president of District 6 Eagles. He was a member of both the Marshall Masonic Delta Lodge 119 and Lona 12 Order of the Eastern Star for over 60 years.
He is survived by his children, June DePyper of Mankato and Norman Berg of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren, Davida Davis, Derrick Berg, and Derrin Berg; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Laura Holland; a brother, Floyd Berg; many nieces and nephews; nine step-children; 20 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara and Albert Berg; two brothers, Theodore and Wesley Berg; and his second wife, Darlene.
