Marshall; Howard Swanson, age 83 of Marshall, passed away on Monday, April 04, 2011 at the Avera Regional Medical Center in Marshall.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. A service of celebration will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Marshall Cemetery with full military honors.
Howard Otto Swanson, the son of Otto and Janette (Miller) Swanson, was born on December 9, 1927 in Marshall. Howard began his education in country school and then attended Marshall High School. On September 6, 1950, he was united in marriage to Betty Heinis in Marshall. Howard served his country during the Korean Conflict. Howard farmed and worked at Bill's Oliver for 33 years. He was the caretaker for the Lyon County Fair for many years.
Howard enjoyed working in his garden, fishing, flowers, collecting coins, playing practical jokes and teasing his grandchildren. Howard loved spending time with his family and spoiling the young ones.
Howard is survived by his wife, Betty; children,William (Bill) Swanson of Carrollton, Texas and Myia (Allen) Sanow of Wenatchee, Washington; 9 grandchildren, Shala (Billy) Irwin, Leea (Shane) Upchurch, Billie Campbell, Ryan Swanson, Mark (Heather) Claeys, Shane (Rebecca) Sanow, Taya (Jesse) Christensen, Shonda (Darrick) Kersten and Brittany (B.J.) (Dale) Curtin; 12 great-grandchildren, sister, Elaine (Wayne) Glasser of Winter Haven, Florida; brother-in-law, Duane Peterson of Tracy and other relatives.
Howard is preceded in death by a daughter, Charlene Claeys Sapp, his parents and sister, Shirley Peterson.
