James “Jim” Uphoff, age 78, of Marshall, Minnesota, died on Saturday, December 5, 2020, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Private Memorial Services will be held on Friday, December 11, 2020, at First Lutheran Church in Marshall, Minnesota. The event will be live streamed, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Graveside interment, open to the public, will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Appleton City Cemetery, Appleton, Minnesota. A public visitation is pending and will be announced once pandemic restrictions ease. Please watch for future announcements.
James Leroy Uphoff was born on June 30, 1942, in Appleton, Minnesota, to Albert and Gertrude (Gallow) Uphoff. He grew up in Correll, Minnesota, and attended grade school there before going to high school in Odessa. Jim graduated with the class of 1961, which included Ms. Andrea Nitz. After a couple years of helping on his family farm, Jim and Andrea were married on March 23, 1963.
Jim and Andrea made their home on the farm where he was proud to work for over 40 years. The couple raised 2 children before moving to St. Joseph in 1988. Jim then began his second career as a custodian and supervisor for the Holdingford Public Schools. He served there for 18½ years before retiring in March of 2006.
Jim was always a social person and enjoyed others. He was a regular greeter and head elder at Love of Christ Lutheran Church in St. Cloud and Jim served on the Appleton School Board. He supported his grandchildren and attended many events including dance competitions and basketball games, and his special breakfast outings will be missed. Jim’s other enjoyments in life included hunting, fishing, camping – He and Andrea served as Sibley State Park hosts for several years.
James Uphoff died on Saturday, December 5, 2020, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 78 years, 5 months, and 5 days. Blessed be his memory.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Andrea Uphoff of Marshall; children, JoEtte (Michael) Swan of Marshall, Kyle Uphoff (Wes Miyazaki) of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; 3 grandchildren, Katy Swan of Hopkins, Jordan Swan of St. Paul, Rachel Swan (Blake Jouwstra) of Minnetonka; sister, Ruth Sorenson of Hopkins; brother, Bruce Uphoff of San Diego, CA; nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Uphoff and Gertrude Land; and siblings, Russell “Buster” Uphoff, Robert Uphoff, and Connie Hinneberg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to donor’s choice.
