Jake DeVos, age 87, of Marshall, Minnesota, died on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall, Minnesota. Mass of Christian Burial is 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 16, 2020, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Interment with military honors will follow in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 16, 2020, at the church. Occupancy limits and social distancing must be observed throughout all services. Masks are required at all public indoor gatherings.
John Jacob DeVos was born in Marshall, Minnesota, on March 13, 1933, to Cyriel and Lena (Boerjan) DeVos. He was baptized, received first communion, and confirmed at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Jake attended school in Marshall before working in the area with local farmers. He honorably served in the United States Army before returning to Marshall.
On June 26, 1965, Jake was united in marriage to Fran Kopitski in Marshall. The couple raised their son, Mike, in Marshall while Jake worked for Louwagie, Fisher, and Verly Farms. In 1989, he began working construction with Brownlee and Hayes.
Jake was a proud member of the Marshall American Legion and VFW. His other interests included vegetable gardening and fishing, but he really just preferred to be around others socializing with friends.
Jake DeVos died on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at age of 87 years, 7 months, and 30 days. Blessed and eternal be his memory.
He is survived by his son, Mike DeVos (Malinda Searcy) of Marshall; 3 grandchildren, Jessica (Jordan) Guetter of Marshall, Spenser Christensen (Jenn Buchholz) of Fulda, Chancey DeVos of Marshall; 2 great-grandsons, Gage Guetter, Grady Guetter; brother, Charlie “Chuck” (Patty) DeVos of Carver; sisters-in-law, Barb DeVos of Marshall, Pat Dwire of Marshall, Irene Polman of Hutchinson, Roseann Varpness of Marshall; nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Jake is preceded in death by his wife, Fran DeVos; parents, Cyriel and Lena DeVos; in-laws, Anton and Clara Kopitski; siblings, Leonard DeVos, Rosie (Tony) Kopitski, Jim DeVos, Mary Ann (Jules) Thooft; and brothers-in-law, Larry Dwire, Al Polman, Jim Varpness; and sisters-in-law, JoAnn (Harlan) Kremin, Laurie (Ed) Bach.
