John Earl Theodore Lund was born on August 7, 1945, in Grafton, North Dakota. He was the son of Earl and Thora (Johnson) Lund. John grew up in North Dakota where he was baptized as an infant by his father and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith while his father served as a Lutheran minister. He attended Larimore High School and graduated with the class of 1963 before continuing his education at Concordia College in Moorhead where he studied education. John went on to teach high school English, primarily to freshman and sophomores at the Marshall public schools beginning in 1967. Ruth Nelson, whom he met at Concordia, joined him as a high school teacher in the business department a couple years later and they married shortly thereafter. She unfortunately passed away from severe diabetes a few years later. John also later earned his master's degree in teaching.

On June 15, 1973, John was united in marriage to Marilyn Peterson at First Lutheran Church in Marshall. A few years later the couple moved to Cherokee, Iowa, to own and operate a hardware store for five years before returning to Marshall. John got back to his love of teaching at Marshall Public Schools where he remained until his retirement in 2001. John and Marilyn raised two boys and spent over 51 years of marriage together.

John was active in the Southwest Minnesota Men's Chorus and the Sons of Norway, he volunteered extensively with the Lyon County Museum, and after retiring John spent several years as a government testing program coordinator where he continued to help students. John was a member of First Lutheran Church in Marshall and sang in the church choir. His enjoyments in life included traveling, bicycling, and spending countless hours in his workshop making sawdust. Woodworking was a passion and a talent and John shared many of his creations with friends and family.

John Lund passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was Just 22 days away from his 79th birthday. Blessed be his memory.
