Karen Egly, age 88, of Marshall, Minnesota, died on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the Prairie Home Hospice – Lockwood House in Marshall, Minnesota. Funeral Services are 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 20, 2024, at the Cornerstone Church in Marshall, Minnesota. A luncheon for attendees will follow at the church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to her celebration, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Friday, also at the church. Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 3, 2025, at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.
Karen Elaine Stroom was born on March 27, 1936, to Noel and Irene (Wight) Stroom in Hot Spring, South Dakota. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed in her youth in the Methodist Faith. Karen graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1954.
On August 16, 1953, Karen was united in marriage to Robert LaRue Egly (Bob) and the couple moved around to several Naval and Marine Corps bases while he served with the United States Marine Corps. When they moved from their last station in North Carolina, Karen and Bob bounced from city to city over the next decade as he continued his schooling and Karen became a devoted mother and homemaker as they raised four children. The family came to settle in Marshall, Minnesota, in 1973 and they have called it home since. Karen went to work for a time with her husband at the Schwan's Sales Enterprises.
Karen enjoyed golfing and was active at the Marshall Golf Club. She was also a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church, which became Cornerstone United Methodist Church. Her enjoyments in life included quilting, knitting, reading, playing cards, cooking, and baking – especially Belgian cookies.
Karen died peacefully under the care of hospice on Sunday, December 15, 2024, in Marshall, Minnesota. She had reached the age of 88 years, 8 months, and 18 days. Blessed be her memory.
She is survived by her four children, L. Edward Egly of Ramsey, Richard A. Egly of Sun City West, AZ, Noella M. Egly of Ft. Collins, CO, Darrell D. (Gwen) Egly of Alexandria; 7 grandchildren, Corrine (Greg) Knettle, Nicole (Mark) Olson, Amanda Gladitsch, Joshua Michener, Matthew Minnick, Nicholas Egly, Julia Egly; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Romey of Payson, AZ; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Karen was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Egly; parents, Noel & Irene Stroom; sister, Lorraine Triem; and a brother, Kenneth Stroom.
