Lars Peter Jappe March 6, 1917 - June 10, 2010 Lars Peter Jappe died peacefully at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall on Thursday June 10, 2010. Funeral services will be at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Christ United Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 PM. to 8:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. prayer service at the Hamilton funeral Home. Visitation will continue at the church on Sunday one hour prior to the service.
Lars was born to Valdemar and Anna (Rothe) Jappe on March 6, 1917 near Milroy, MN. He was baptized in the Parent home on the 13th of May 1917 and later confirmed in the Christ LutheranChurch in Marshall Minnesota. Lars’ elementary education started in Stanley township in a country school, after the move to Sodus Township he completed the 8th grade in District #13 Amiret, Minnesota. His favorite teacher was Miss Cole. Lars enlisted in the U.S. Army in November of 1941. Training began at Fort Knox , Kentucky and he served four years . He was a tank commander in North Africa with the 751st army battalion.
On June 29, 1946, Lars was united in marriage to Phyllis Johnson in the Congregational Federated Church (Christ United Presbyterian Church) in Marshall. Lars worked for the Koob Implement Co in Marshall as a mechanic until he began farming. He farmed the land and had dairy for the main part, traveling when they could. They moved to Marshall in 2003. Lars became a resident at Morning Side Heights just before January 2004.
As a young man, Lars enjoyed playing baseball, horseshoes, tobogganing, dancing and square dancing, woodworking, playing cards. He played the accordion and harmonica. He loved spending time with family, especially with his grandchildren. All who knew Lars will remember his kind heart and clever sense of humor. . Lars passed away at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center on June 10, 2010. He had reached the age of 93 years, 3 months and 4 days.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Marshall; four sons, Lars Jappe Jr. of Queens, NY, William Jappe of Huntington Beach,CA, Robert (Jill) Jappe of Grand Junction CO, and Steven (Patti) Jappe of ‘Denver, CO; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Nicole, Susan, Sarah, Leah, Morgan, Fallon, Nathan and Jasen; four great- granddaughters, two great-grandsons. and several nieces and nephews, as well as his extended family of compassionate caregivers at Morningside Heights. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Agnes (Clarence)Schroeder, and Elsie (Einar) Oftedal.
