Lonnel Lewis Moon was born on November 23, 1940, in Tracy, Minnesota, to Harvey and Arloine (Lewis) Moon. He was raised by his mother and Arthur Scotting near Hendricks. He was raised a very faithful person, living just across the street from their church. He was baptized and confirmed at New Grove Evangelical United Brethren Church. He attended country school before Hendricks High School. After graduating with the class of 1958, Lon went on to Beadle State College in Madison, SD, and then Westmar College in LeMars, IA, where he met Ms. Robin Sack. Lon started his life of education teaching for 2 years at a one-room school house in Brookings County, SD, and then a couple more years in DeSmet, SD. Lon went on to earn his Master’s Degree from Minnesota State University in Mankato.

On August 27, 1965, Lon and Robin were united in marriage in Spring Valley, MN. The couple moved to Marshall where Lon taught 6th grade. After a brief period of teaching in Mapleton, MN, they returned to Marshall in 1969. Lon taught at Marshall Middle School from 1969 – 1979, and then at Southwest Minnesota State University from 1979-1981. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity. Lon finished his career teaching 5th Grade at East Side and Parkside Elementary for 20 years. All told, he devoted over 40 years to his work and passion of education.

Lon and Robin had 2 daughters, Joanna and Sarah, and shared over 52 years of marriage. Lon was a long-time member of Albright and then Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Marshall. He served in many roles including both youth and adult education, youth leader, Wednesday morning Bible study, and served on various committees and council positions. Lon was also proud to be part of the team that started the Plum Creek Library System. Lon was known to sing with his family, at church and as part of the Gospel 4 traveling quartet sharing the good news of Christ's salvation. Lon was a spiritual person and lead his life by faith. He was always active; enjoyments included antiques, refinishing furniture, caning (cane-woven furniture), playing piano, drama (both in high school and college), poetry, calligraphy, framing and matting pictures, table-setting, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Lon went home to his Heavenly Father on February 1, 2018, at the age of 77 years, 2 months, and 9 days. His long battle with Alzheimer’s is now over. He will be dearly missed. Lon is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Robin Moon of Marshall; daughters, Joanna (Matthew) McKenzie of Oakdale, Sarah (Russell) Svenningson of Sioux Falls, SD; 4 grandchildren, Anders Svenningsen, Jack McKenzie, Annika Svenningsen, Jude McKenzie; brothers, Marlin (Janet) Scotting of Grand Junction, CO, Kevin Scotting of DeSmet, SD, brother-in-law, Charles (Betty) Mathison of Port Hueneme, CA; sisters-in-law, Karen (Darrell) Vreeman of Ostrander, Deanna (Dave) Von of Rochester, Marlene (Judy Kennison) Sack of Ithaca, NY; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jonathon and Hannah Lewis, parents, Arthur and Arloine (Lewis) Scotting; mother-in-law, Dorothy (Sack) Lichty; fathers-in-law, Arno Sack and Wallace Lichty; infant brother, Bruce Moon; brother-in-law, Charlie Lichty; and sister-in-law, Alona Scotting.
