Lowell Bagstad, age 99, of Marshall, Minnesota, died on Friday, January 15, 2021, at his home. A graveside memorial service is being planned for later this year at the Marshall Cemetery. Please watch for future announcements.
Lowell Arthur Bagstad was born on September 23, 1921, in Benson, Minnesota, to Carl and Minnie (Frederick) Bagstad. He grew up with three sisters. Lowell was baptized at Lake Hazel Lutheran Church and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran in Benson. He attended Plainview Country School before going to high school in Benson, graduating with the class of 1939.
Lowell joined the National Guard and was called into active service February 10, 1941. Lowell was in the army for 57 months; thirteen months spent overseas in Europe serving his country in World War II. He was awarded three battle stars and received his honorable discharge October 31, 1945.
On January 26, 1946, Lowell married Elynor “Honey” (Gilbertson) Bagstad in Benson. They raised two children and then in 1956 made their home in Marshall, Minnesota. Lowell worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1986.
Lowell was a gifted storyteller and had a great sense of humor. His memory was remarkable, especially when it came to Minnesota sports statistics, particularly Gopher football and basketball. He was knowledgeable about almost every topic and kept his mind sharp by reading the newspaper and working the crossword puzzle daily. Lowell was a hard worker his whole life and continued to find work to do around the house at age 99. His wit and wisdom will be greatly missed. Lowell was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He was also a great neighbor and friend.
Lowell Bagstad died January 15, 2021, at the age of 99, at his home where he lived for over 60 years in Marshall, Minnesota. Lowell was blessed to have a loving family and wonderful neighbors and friends who will miss him.
Lowell is survived by his children, Roger (Cherie) Bagstad of Asbury, IA, Jane Bagstad (Terry Olson) of Wadena; grandchildren, Kristi Bagstad, Tim (Erica) Bagstad, Marney Olson (Kelly Armstrong); great-grandchildren, Clara and Nate Droessler and Theo and Lev Bagstad.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 73 years, Elynor Bagstad, and his granddaughter, Johanna Olson.
