Merrial Ellen Thares

Marshall: Merrial Thares, age 50, of Marshall, passed away at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center on Friday, August 24, 2012. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 28th at the Radiant Life Church in Marshall. Visitation will be 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. prayer service on Monday at the church and will continue on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery.
Merrial was born on March 22, 1962 to Rex D. and Frieda (Huckfeldt) Nelson in Seattle Washington. She grew up in Seattle area living in Snohomish, Monroe, and Lynnwood Washington areas before moving to South Dakota. She graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1980 and then attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in 1983, a degree in biology from Southwestern Minnesota State University in Marshall in 2001 and her master's degree in anatomy/physiology in 2004 from South Dakota State University in Brookings. She married Steven Thares June 4, 1983 in Pierre, SD. They lived in Hastings, NE; Garden City, KS; Rock Springs, WY; Hayward, CA; and finally settling in Lynd and Marshall areas in April,1994.
Merrial taught in various schools in the communities they lived in including as a professor at SDSU, Ridgewater College in Wilmer, MN, and most recently, in the Marshall School District.
Merrial was baptized at First Presbyterian in Lynnwood, WA. Her faith remained a centering point throughout her life and most recently was an active member of the Radiant Life Church in Marshall.
Merrial devoted her life to helping the youth of her community learn what it takes to be dedicated and strong members of society. She dedicated more than 20 years of her life working with Boys Scouts of America at both the local, district and council levels and served as a youth and adult leader in Girls Scouts of America. She was always willing to help anyone she could. She served as team mom for club and high school swim teams. She was a master knitter and always had a project in progress.
Merrial is survived by her husband, Steve of Marshall; son, Arthur (Cassie) Thares of Savage; daughter, Aurora Thares, of Marshall; granddaughter, Phinley, Savage; brothers, Marvin Nelson of Miller, SD; Russell (Teri) Nelson of Selah, WA; William (Maureen) Nelson, of Monroe, WA, Aunt Eileen O'Day of Pierre, SD; Uncle Calvin Nelson, of Pierre, SD, and Norma Jean Junkman of Washougal, WA, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven uncles; and seven aunts.
