Norman Udell Steen

November 12, 1927 — June 30, 2008

Norman Steen, age 80, of Marshall, passed away on Monday, June 30, 2008 at the Minneota Manor Care Center. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 5, at 2 PM at Grace Life Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery. Online condolences available at the www.hamiltonfh.com
Norman Udell Steen was born on November 12, 1927, in Minot, North Dakota, to Carl and Clara (Markestad) Steen. He attended 8 years of country school before he graduated from Glenburn High School in North Dakota, and then went on to serve 2 years in the United States Navy. Norm served on the USS Taswell as a troop carrier to Japan and Okinawa during World War II. He also served on ship LS MR 402. Upon returning from the military, he enrolled in mechanic training courses in Fargo, ND. He completed 2 years at Wahpeton, ND, School of Science for Radio Electronics and then did 6 months of training for television repair in Kansas City, MO.
On June 29, 1952, Norm was united in marriage to Iona Avis Moe at West St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Enderlin, ND. To this union, 6 children were born. He worked for 33 years with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and was also a missionary to Bolivia, South America. After retiring, Norm and Iona loved to travel to many foreign countries, including Russia, Haiti, Cuba, Mexico, Israel, and Bolivia.
He enjoyed many pastimes such as gardening, photography, reading the Bible daily, and spending time with family and friends. Norm loved Jesus Christ as his personal savior and took great joy in spreading His good word!
Norman passed away at the age of 80 years, 7 months, and 18 days.
Survivors include his wife, Iona of Marshall; six children, Naomi (and Mike) Muscha Of Enderlin, ND, Nathan (and Kathy) Steen of Rugby, ND, Miriam (and Richard) Ludeke of Marshall, Mark Steen of Orangefield, TX, Matt (and Laurel) Steen of Marshall, and Mary (and Darin) Veldhuisen of Marshall; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren (and three on the way); three siblings, Clayton, Evelyn, and Myrtle; adopted in heart, Jim Steen of Bolivia, and Sam & Mary Menefee of Virginia; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Clara; great-grandchild, Malachi; and ten siblings.
