Phyllis Nadine Moberg

Phyllis Nadine Moberg, age 93, of Marshall, Minnesota, peacefully went to be with her beautiful Savior on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at her home in Marshall with her loving husband and children by her side. Celebration for Phyllis is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2020, at Living Word Lutheran Church in Marshall, Minnesota. A celebration meal for attendees will follow at the church. Private interment will be at a later date in the Marshall Cemetery. Visitation will be held before the service, from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Living Word Lutheran Church in Marshall.

Phyllis Nadine (Nelson) Moberg was born on October 26, 1926, in Tyler, Minnesota, to N.P. and Johanna Nelson. She grew up in Tyler and graduated from Tyler High School in 1945. She further studied music and piano and was a medical receptionist at the Tyler Clinic for several prominent doctors. This is where she met Mr. Jerry Moberg, the love of her life.

They were married October 22, 1948. The couple lived in Marshall where she was employed with Stone’s Ready-To-Wear clothing store for a short time before Jerry was called to service in the Medical Battalion at Camp Rucker, Alabama, for the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. They lived for 2 years in Alabama before returning to Marshall. As Jerry joined his father in business, Phyllis returned to Stone’s Clothing.

Phyllis was an active member of Christ United Presbyterian Church in Marshall, active with the Presbyterian Women and sang in the church choir for 40 years. Through the years, Phyllis helped with Meals On Wheels, was a member of the General Foundation of Women’s Study Club, member of the National Association of Women’s Business Organization, and was very active in the Southwest Minnesota Arts and Humanities Council. Phyllis also volunteered for the Marshall Area Fine Arts Council (MAFAC). Much of her time was lovingly spent welcoming newcomers to town, staring with the “Welcome Wagon” and later starting her own business called “Welcome Home.” She loved and enjoyed people no matter what their status, but most of all she loved family. Phyllis loved to host friends, play the piano, and sing for her family and other friends and their families whom she treasured so much. She very passionate about music, theater, arts, gardening, interior decorating, traveling, and entertaining.

Phyllis leaves a legacy of humanity that will carry on her memory for years. She will be remembered for her vivacious character, sincere and warm personality, and her gentle and compassionate outlook on life. She approached life with outstretched arms and had a hug ready for everyone, from any walk of life. She was a source of endless maternal inspiration to her son and daughters and a loving “Nana” to her grandchildren. Phyllis was many things to many people, yet she only had one hero, her husband Jerry. For over 71 years, they have been the perfect complement, a true bringing together of heart and soul. She always wanted others to share in the excitement of life. She left a spark, an impression on all who knew her, and she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Jerry Moberg of Marshall; 3 children, Barry Moberg of Spicer, Cynthia (Brian) Pfeiffer of Marshall, Michelle (Rob) Howat of Maple Plain; 5 grandchildren, Laura (Travis) Andries, Hannah Pfeiffer, Colin Pfeiffer, Benjamin Nelson, Mikaela Yager-Moberg; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Jo Andries; sister, Carol Nielsen of Ft. Myers, FL; nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Johanna and Nels Nelson; sister, Irma Mattson; and brother, Don Nelson.

Memorials are preferred to the GR & Phyllis Moberg Scholarship Fund (in care of SMSU), Prairie Home Hospice of Marshall, MAFAC (Marshal Area Fine Arts Council), or Hope Harbor in Marshall. A special thank you for all the wonderful care she received from Prairie Home Hospice and her caregiver, Jamie.
