Sharon McCully, age 83, of Marshall, Minnesota, died peacefully on Friday, October 7, 2022, at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. Memorial Services are 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at the First Baptist Church in Marshall, Minnesota. Interment with Military Honors will take place at a future date in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2022, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will then continue one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the church.
Sharon Ann Johnson was born to Harold and Fern (Kemnitz) Johnson on September 28, 1939, in Pipestone, Minnesota. She graduated from Russell High School with the class of 1957 and went on to attend the Sioux Valley School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She graduated from there in 1962 and worked as a registered nurse on the Rosebud Indian Reservation before moving to Spokane, Washington.
Sharon then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served her country for four years, from 1968 until 1972, during the Vietnam War. She was an Evacuation Nurse and received her honorable discharge as a Captain. Following her discharge, she worked as a nurse in various positions in California and Cape Cod before settling back in Sioux Falls to be near her parents. It was there that she met Mr. Joe McCully and the two were married in 1984. The couple lived in South Dakota and then Cheyenne, Wyoming. They shared just 11 years of marriage prior to his passing in 1995.
In 2007 Sharon retired and moved to Marshall, Minnesota, where she spent many years at Hill Street Place. Her enjoyments in life included reading, writing inspirational pieces, collecting cookbooks, sending out cards to family and friends, photography of flowers, and time spent volunteering with the Avera Auxiliary, particularly the Thrift Store.
Sharon McCully died on Friday, October 7, 2022, in Marshall, Minnesota, just nine days after her 83rd birthday. Blessed be her memory.
She is survived by her 2 sisters, Melva Wall of Hillsboro, OR, Pamela (and Lee) Bush of Russell; step-daughter, Barbara Curtis of Sioux Falls, SD; step-son, Greg McCully of Minneapolis; 2 step-grandchildren, Amanda Fritz and Mitchell Curtis of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joe McCully.
