Sharon Faye Kalsbeek was born in Orange City, Iowa, to Gerard and Florence (DeStigter) Kalsbeek on October 2, 1942, during the war years. Her father did not meet her for several months after her birth because he was an army sergeant stationed in California. Sharon traveled as an infant with her mother to California and Texas where her father was stationed, and they lived together until he was shipped to Europe to fight in the war.
Once WWII ended and her father returned home, the family settled in Alton, Iowa, where they eventually welcomed two additional children to their happy home. Sharon graduated from Floyd Valley High School in 1960, and she worked at her uncle’s appliance store in Orange City, Iowa, until relocating to Minneapolis to attend the College of Medical Technology. Upon completion of her training there, Sharon accepted a position as a medical technologist at the hospital in Hendricks, Minnesota, which changed the course of her life. Sylvia Kurth, her coworker and friend, introduced her to Dale Peder Trulock, the love of her life.
Sharon and Dale were married on a beautiful day, June 19, 1965, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa, surrounded by family and friends. The newlyweds initially lived in a tiny rental house in Milroy, Minnesota, where Dale was teaching Vocational Agriculture at the high school. Sharon soon began working part time in Marshall as a medical technologist. They eventually bought a house near the high school and lived in Milroy for 52 years.
Sharon and Dale led active lives and were both extremely involved in the Milroy community and their church. During the summer, they enjoyed camping with family and friends and spending time at the Wahlstrom’s cabin on the lake. They attended all sorts of family gatherings on both sides of their large, extended families including the annual Kalsbeek summer meet-up in Orange City, families arriving from both coasts and staying all together in Grandpa and Grandma’s small house. Sharon and Dale never missed a niece or nephew’s high school graduation, even if it meant flying to one coast or the other. They were avid sports fans watching the Twins’, Vikings’ and Lynx’s games on television, to name a few.
Sharon’s hobbies include vegetable and flower gardening, crafting, sewing and quilting. She was also active in many women’s groups both in church and the community. She was a skilled hostess, often offering her house a site for gatherings of her various clubs and frequently serving as chairperson of these clubs.
Sharon was a very kind, thoughtful person. She was devoted to Dale and both his and her family members. She was especially attentive to her parents in Orange City as they aged, and both she and Dale did so much for them. Sharon never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She was a shopper and enjoyed purchasing that special gift for a loved one or friend.
When their health declined in 2018, Dale and Sharon moved to Heritage Pointe Assisted Living in Marshall, Minnesota. Dale passed away there in 2020. Sharon’s health declined further as Parkinson’s Disease progressed, and she spent the last several years of her life at Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy, Minnesota, where she passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025, at the age of 82.
Sharon is survived by her brother, Bill (Rebecca) Kalsbeek of Raleigh, NC; their children: Sarah (David) With of Garner, NC, and Brian (Melia) Kalsbeek of Raleigh, NC; sister, Mary (Jack) Suite of Concord, CA; Mary’s children: Jeff (Tannia) Kiyama of San Diego, CA, and Dr. Lindsay (John Scholtz) Kiyama of Santa Rosa, CA; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Keith) Wahlstrom of Bloomington, MN; their children: Daniel (Amy) Wahlstrom of Farmington, MN, Darren Wahlstrom of Minneapolis, MN, Alan Wahlstrom of Minneapolis, MN; along with many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Sharon was preceded in death by Dale and her parents.
Those we love don’t go away.
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed, forever dear.
