Sylvia Patlan, age 64, of Marshall, Minnesota, died peacefully on Monday, January 18, 2021, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 21, 2021, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall, Minnesota. A walk-through visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. Occupancy limits and social distancing must be observed throughout all services. Masks are required at all public indoor gatherings.
Sylvia De La Paz Castro was born to Marcial and Dora (De La Paz) Castro in San Antonio, Texas, on December 14, 1956. She was baptized as an infant, received first communion, and was confirmed in the Catholic faith. She attended school in San Antonio before working various jobs, including as a seamstress and working in local crop fields.
Sylvia and a neighbor that caught her eye, Gustavo Patlan, were married on June 8, 1972. The couple made their home in Lytle, Texas, where Sylvia raised her growing family. The couple raised 3 children and moved to Marshall, Minnesota, in 2005 to be closer to family. She and Gustavo shared over 47 years of marriage together.
Sylvia was a regular volunteer at the Avera Thrift Shop and enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino. She loved to be outside in nature when she wasn’t caring for her family, especially her grandchildren.
Sylvia Patlan died with family at her side in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Monday, January 18, 2021. She reached the age of 64 years, 1 month, and 4 days. Blessed and eternal be her memory.
She is survived by her husband, Gustavo Patlan of Marshall; children, Monica Patlan of Marshall, Rosalinda “Rosie” (Noel) Ayala of Marshall, James Patlan of San Antonio, TX; 8 grandchildren, Noel Amaya-Peggo, Zoey Ayala, Leila Ayala, Mia Ayala, Jasmine Patlan, Chloe Patlan, Eliza Patlan, Jacob Patlan; 2 great-grandchildren, Remus Amaya-Peggo, Dorian Amaya-Peggo; sisters, Rosemary Hernandez of Lytle, TX, Linda Castro of Lytle, TX; brothers, Eloy Castro of Lytle, TX, Ray Castro of Lytle, TX, Robert Castro of San Antonio, TX, Leonardo Castro of Norwalk, OH; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Marcial and Dora Castro, and brother, Henry Castro.
