Vernon Albers, age 96, of Marshall and formerly of Redwood Falls, Minnesota, died on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the Heritage Pointe Senior Living Center in Marshall, Minnesota. Funeral Services are 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2022, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marshall, Minnesota. Following a reception, interment will be in the St. Matthew’s Cemetery, south of Wabasso, Minnesota. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2022, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. The evening will conclude with a Prayer Service and Memory Share at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will then continue one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John Lutheran School in Redwood Falls (www.sjschool.org) or Samuel Lutheran School in Marshall (www.christlutheran-marshallmn.org and click on school).
Vernon John Albers was born at home on January 23, 1926, in Granite Rock Township, Redwood County, Minnesota. He was the son of John and Margaret (Subbert) Albers. Vernon was baptized as an infant and confirmed in his youth in the Lutheran church and he attended country school near Lucan, Minnesota.
Vernon enlisted in the United States Navy in May 1944. He attended boot camp at Farragut Naval Training Station near Farragut, Idaho. Upon completion of boot camp, Vernon was transferred to San Diego Naval Base in California where he was assigned as a Seaman Guard as part of the Navy Shore Patrol. He was honorably discharged in July 1946 after the end of WWII.
Vernon and Evelyn (Lang) were united in marriage on August 18, 1948, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Waterbury Township, Redwood County. The couple enjoyed 73 1/2 years of marriage together and had three children. Vernon and Evelyn farmed in Paxton Township, Redwood County, until 1988 at which time they retired and moved into Redwood Falls. After retirement Vernon worked for Magic Water in Redwood Falls until 2008. In April 2015 they moved to Marshall, Minnesota.
Vernon was a member of the American Legion - Post 38 in Redwood Falls. He was a board member at the Scenic City Co-Op in Redwood Falls He served on several boards at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls. Vernon enjoyed pitching for local fast pitch softball teams in Redwood County, fishing, and he was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Family was a very important part of his life and he often looked for a card game with family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn Albers of Marshall; three children, John (Patricia) Albers of Redwood Falls, MN, Wayne (Marlene) Albers of Saint Peter, MN, Sharon (Lee) DeBlieck of Marshall, MN; seven grandchildren, Kelly (Jeff) Myhre, Heather (Travis) Fischer, Alicia (Christopher) George, Cole (Beatrice) DeBlieck, Katherine (Joshua) Ley, Kindra Albers, Eric DeBlieck (Erin Todd); nine great-grandchildren, Sean DeBlieck, Adyson Fischer, Callen Fischer, Conner George, Joseph Myhre, Preston DeBlieck, Charlotte Ley, Claire George, Lorelei Ley; brother-in-law, Donald (Carole) Lang of Sioux Falls, SD; as well as many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Albers, and siblings, Harold Subbert, Leona Krusemark, Luthera Weiss, Margorie Imker, and Betty Ann Jaeger. Vernon will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
